Do you have a type?

No I'm not talking about a romantic partner kind of type, I mean a type of game? Perhaps its a style of gameplay that really tickles your fancy, or even a recurring theme that grips you from start to finish? I was busy reorganising my games on my shelf one day and I began to realise there are some connections that I couldn't help but make.

One of those for me was my apparent fascination with Asian themes in games. I don't know if it's just a coincidence or if I am subconsciously gravitating towards it when I browse for a new game to buy. Either way, it seems to be something and it got me thinking, does anyone else have this show up in their collection?

It all started with my purchase of Tsuro, I saw the game played on Table Top and was instantly infatuated with it, the elegance and simplicity made it a great game that I could play with my less than nerdy family. This was followed by the purchase of Lanterns, a lovely little game that was not too far removed in mechanics from Tsuro, however scratched a completely different itch.

I was then went on a bit of a spree, adding to my collection Tokaido, Takenoko and Sushi Go! none of which I regret buying (however my bank account certainly wasn't smiling at me). As my collection began to grow I noticed I had an affection for the gameplay that these games offered. They weren't the hard nosed competitive games I had come to know from my collection, they were soft and had a sense of finesse.

And I think this is what draws me to these types of games, sure I love the cultures that are at show here, but it's they way that the theme and the gameplay seamless blend together that brings me back game after game. So tell me, what's your type of game? Is it a particular mechanic? Or perhaps like me, you have a particular theme that continues to pique your interest?
