Catan VR Announced

Brent | September 03, 2017

Settlers of Catan has been a worldwide phenomenon for almost 25 years, garnering fans from all aspects of gaming. With every new release the game has expanded and gone from a simple to learn gateway game to a vastly strategic masterpiece. Catan is a favourite among many and now, with the help of Experiment 7, Catan Studios and Asmodee Digital, we will soon be enjoying Catan VR. This will be released to the Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear later this year but who knows, maybe if it's a success we might even find it come to other parts of the VR market.

The announcement trailer does not feature any gameplay so we will have to wait and see what it to come of it, however it does feature a touching, while scripted, moment between the creator of the game, Klaus Teuber and his Son, being shown his creation for the first time in Virtual Reality. It made me excited to think of something that we have been on such a long journey with is finally coming even closer to being a part of our world.

Klaus Teuber said of his creation: "The first time I saw Catan on the Magic Table, I was fascinated by what VR has to offer, The game I made in our living room with my family 25 years ago in virtual reality? It’s incredible. I never imagined actually stepping into the world of Catan when we first started making cut-outs and dreaming about exploring new lands."

There is a lot of potention for the VR version of the game to break new grounds with what Catan can be, customisation and player interation would go a long way to making this a worth while investment. It;s encouraging to see games start to come out and use the technology to the best of its capabilites. Games like Werewolves Within and Mask of Anubis are leading the way and it was only a matter of time until one of the big players started to dip their feet in.

The official release date for the game has not been announced, but it is expected to be out in time for the holidays.
