Time to be a bit biased on here... Five Tribes is my absolute favourite board game! I'm not ashamed to say and I won't appologise for putting it everywhere on my site...Ahem.
Ok with that out of the way, Days of Wonders has announced the release of another expansion for Five Tribes called "Whims of the Sultan". Now many people think based on the name that Bruno Cathala's game would accomadate the 5 players, however the Tribes refered to are not the players, but rather the who the players are manipulating to further their own means. But even with this understanding it always felt like a game that could easily add a fifth player.
Now there is always going to be the same complaint about Five Tribes, as it is sometimes called "Downtime: the Game", but I feel this is an unfair conclusion to come to when talking about adding more players. For me, the game is only subject to analysis paralysis if you let it. I find myself always interested in what the other player is doing, hell sometimes I even suggest moves they could make that they may not see (I prefer peope to enjoy the games than be overly competitive, perhaps I'm alone in that instance),
All that being said, the Whims of the Sultan adds another player and I couldn't be happier, this is what the publisher had to say:
"The Sultanate of Naqala continues to flourish. This time of prosperity has attracted more competitors than grains of sand in the desert, so if you expect to remain on top, you’ll have to learn some new tricks… especially since the Sultan founded 5 new fabulous cities that everyone wants to control. I’ve also heard that the Sultan sometimes holds hearings in those cities, offering huge rewards to those who grant him his whims. Will you be able to control the fabulous cities and fulfill the Sultan’s capricious wishes?"
The expansion comes with 6 tiles, 15 wooden tribe meeples, 8 camels, 1 tent and 1 player’s turn marker, 22 Whim of the Sultan cards, 2 Djinn cards,1 bid order track and 1 turn order track for 5 player games, 1 pad of scoring sheets, and 1 summary sheet. The expansion is expected to be available in June in Europe and at Gen Con Indy 2017 in August for North America at a suggested retail price of €25/$30USD.
